Shared Hosting
This is the most ‘traditional’ form of hosting, in which the data for a number of websites is stored in a partitioned, shared server. It's also the most common and cost-effective form of hosting. Unfortunately, security can be compromised in shared hosting, as it doesn’t support secure sites (HTTPS). Also, the fact that the data for a number of sites rely heavily on the CPU and memory of a single server means that they can end up vying sites for resources, which can occasionally affect performance.Virtual Hosting
Virtual hosting (also referred to as VPS) is when, though a number of computers share a machine, the server is geared to perform as though each has it’s own box. It’s just as it sounds: your website operates off a virtual server that is itself hosted on a server.
This kind of hosting presents a happy medium for small business, as it operates on the assumption that small business websites aren’t hugely busy 24/7. When one website’s data isn’t being used, its capability is stepped down to better enable the other sites hosted on that machine – a virtual juggling act, if you will. This comes with considerable benefits, namely better data transfer and higher storage limits, at a cost that’s a bit higher than shared hosting but still considerably less than dedicated hosting.
The downside of virtual hosting is that, despite the efforts of the virtualisation, the sites do sometimes need to compete for the provider’s service in times of high traffic. Other potential issues is that your business’s site might need to share an IP address with a site that doesn’t complement yours very well, which can sometimes affect your search ranking. On the whole, though, virtual hosting is an excellent solution for small businesses looking for a cost-effective way of getting the most out of their hosting budget.
Dedicated hosting
This form of hosting gives your website its own physical server, and allows for the greatest degree of flexibility and headroom with which to operate your website. This is the most expensive form of third party hosting, but the cost is still much less than setting up and maintaining your own server. If you opt for dedicated hosting, then it’s wise to investigate what kind of service and maintenance will be provided. If you’re going to spend an enormous amount on hosting, you’ll want to be able to ring at 10pm for help if your website crashes for some reason. Typically, dedicated hosting is best suited to content-rich sites that accommodate very high levels of traffic – it can be slight overkill for a moderate sized e-commerce site.
